The Video Player Experience: A Feature for the User, a Feature for the Hoster

We've just released a few new features for the flash player. For the user, we've added a "high water" mark showing furthest point in the video you've watched. For the web-site owner who embeds a FreeIQ video player on their sites, we're now integrated with Google Analytics to help you understand how users are engaging with your video. Read on...

For the User

Say you start a video one Saturday afternoon and don't get to watch all of it, or you're watching a video and you rewind because you missed a bit of content. The high water mark helps you know where in the video you left off.

The image below shows a player where the user has watched up to about 3 minutes, but rewound to minute 1. The green vertical bar in the timeline helps the viewer return to finish watching the video. freeiq_video_player_watermark.png

For the Hoster

If you embed a FreeIQ video player and use the free Google Analtyics solution, we'll log entries to your analytics telling you how many folks start watching the video, completed watching the video, click through to your author page, etc.

Here's the full table of events you'll see in your analytics stream:

Log EntryUser Action
/freeiqvideo/playstart/(video name) start the video
/freeiqvideo/playcomplete/(video name) finish the video
/freeiqvideo/authorinfo/(authorHomepage) view author tab
/freeiqvideo/outgoing/freeiqauthorpage/(authorHomepage)click through to author homepage
/freeiqvideo/outgoing/freeiqiqpon/(authorHomepage)/(iqponPage) click through to iqpon
/freeiqvideo/email/(video name) send a share email
/freeiqvideo/embed/(video name) get embed codes

You can opt out of this by sending the parameter "useGoogleAnalytics" as false in the embed code, and of course, if you don't use Google Analytics, nothing undesirable will happen. If you use Google Analytics on your site, this will automatically appear in your reports. If you don't, you may want to consider adding Google Analytics to your site, at which point, these will begin appearing in your reports.

So, to our users, happy viewing. To our web-site owners, dedicated stats on viewership of video on your site is yet another reason to use FreeIQ.

Marketplace Introduced - Affiliates Can Now Easily Browse for Products to Promote

As we wrap up the week we're excited to introduce a new aspect about Free IQ that will help both Affiliates and Content Providers.

One of the keys to Free IQ is the ability to promote other people's content and make money from the sales generated. With that in mind, today we introduce the initial beta version of the place you will go to select content for promotion: the Marketplace.

  • Affiliates will now have a place to browse for content to promote and details about the products

  • Content Providers will now have a place where their content can be found - to then be promoted

To find the Marketplace, go to your Account Manager.

The Marketplace tab is to the far right.

When you select the Marketplace tab you'll see a page that includes the following details:

  • Thumbnail of the product

  • Product Title and My Affiliate Link

  • Price

  • Affiliate Profit

  • Number of Purchases per 10,000 views

  • Total Income per 10,000 views

  • Recurring Price

  • Recurring Profit

In the Marketplace you will have everything you need to find content and create your unique affiliate links so that you can begin promoting product and making money from referrals. There will be several enhancements added in the near future, like search filters, but this beta version will get us in the game.

In addition to the Marketplace introduction, there are a couple of other noteworthy site improvements.

Search result display is improved - the number of rows displayed on each page is now customizable per user. There is a dropdown to the right of each of the "next" pagination links which allows for on-the-fly modification. This automatically alters the preferences of the user, so that the same display counts are used the next time as well.

Also, we've amped up the search speed, so there shouldn't be any query that takes more than a second, and most will be nearly instantaneous.

As always, your comments and feedback are welcome. Let us know how this beta version is improving, and especially if you have any comments about the Marketplace. We certainly are building this functionality for you, the Affiliate, so if there are any improvements you can suggest that you think will increase the amount of money you can make.... let us know!

Pagination and Unique Author Results

A quick update from the development team to let you know specifically about two new additions to the site.

First, with so much content being added to the site the time has come to implement pagination. You'll notice the search results display ten per page (and can be changed for your personal preference). The additional pages are available at the bottom of each page, in typical fashion.

The other improvement to the search results involves summary counts.

A typical note at the top of the page will read like this:
"Results for ecommerce (Found 115, Displaying 52 results from unique authors)"

What exactly does that mean?

The first number is simple. It's just the total count for all content found that matches the search term(s). So, in this example there are 115 pieces of content available for the term 'e-commerce.'

But what does "52 results from unique authors" mean?

Well, to help present a concentrated search result we're displaying only the first two content pieces from any given author and then providing a link to access any additional content, if more than two. The reason for this is that in some cases an author will have eight or ten or more pieces of content that are part of a series, and displaying all of them gets to be cumbersome on an initial search result page.

We think this will help users get to helpful content related to their search much more quickly.

These site enhancements are two examples of priorities that were identified by users. So, thanks a bunch for helping us with continuous feedback about the site and please keep the comments and suggestions coming!
